Nusayba, 7th grade
(not intentionally!)
At the beginning of each semester, I ask students to answer a few questions in a letter to me. One of the question I ask them to answer is, "What is one thing you'd like to learn about in this class?". Not to my surprise, many students expressed a desire in learning about graffiti... and I'm glad they did! We started by looking at the history of graffiti and learning about how it has evolved into what it is today. We discussed our opinions about graffiti as art vs. vandalism. Could it be both? We decided that although some graffiti may be thought-provoking and beautiful, it is still vandalism unless done legally! We talked about Banksy, who is a famous street artist whose work sells for millions. Next we used this site to create our very own graffiti tag names. They printed out their graffiti tags, drew them freehand and then added color with colored pencil. The students utilized techniques such as blending and layering and added their own design and creativity. Carlo, 8th grade Isaac, 7th grade After they designed and colored their tag names, the students cut them out and pasted them on construction paper to make them pop! Nusayba, 7th grade The last step was hanging their finished projects on the brick wall that we created for display! Rachel, 7th grade Cody, 8th grade Jessica, 7th grade, made her graffiti look like Disney princess, Ariel (not intentionally!) Tessa, 8th grade Cameron, 7th grade Shreya, 7th grade Clay, 7th grade Ocean, 7th grade Cami, 7th grade Brenda, 7th grade Bobby, 7th grade These kiddos created some AWESOME work, which made an EPIC display! And to top it all off, I got a picture of Tatiana smiling! Success!
