Have you ever looked up into the sky and seen a dragon in the clouds? When I was a kid, my mom and I would have so much fun laying in the grass and find little characters and creatures in the clouds. Did you ever do that? If not, its's not too late! This project was sort of like that... Students started by scribbling all over their page and then they looked for things within the scribbles! Once they found something they liked, they refined their sketch into a finalized drawing and added color with watercolor pencils. They did an awesome job! This year, I also had the students create stories with the characters by the other students at their table. They're stories were super creative and usually pretty darn funny too! Some groups even created backdrops by drawing out scenes on the board! Take a bow, kiddos!
I love this project. My Advanced students started by studying and discussing work by expressive mixed media artists, Dan Eldon and Robert Rauschenberg. Then they picked a theme or message that they wanted to send through their artwork. They used the image transfer technique along with various experimental painting techniques... and they make some incredible stuff. Students also created artist statements to tell viewers what their work was about and the process they went through to create it. To finish off the project, students presented their work along with their artist statements, but some of their work was already hanging.. what were we to do? Take a field trip down the hall to the hanging artwork while marching in line holding a piece of yarn, of course! I know what you're thinking, "we did that when we were in kindergarten"! You might think my 8th graders would be annoyed and upset... but not these crazy (wonderful) kiddos! All smiles here :D And then they all listened intently while students took turns presenting their work.. except that kid smiling at the camera... SHAKEEL!! Take a minute to watch the video below; it's the artist statement by my spectacular student Jillian, who made her piece, Fly High, in honor of her uncle. It is absolutely beautiful. So AWESOME!
Students designed and drew their own cities in 2-point perspective! Here's an architect in the making!! Amiright?!!?
Artprompts.org is awesome! My students chose "character" or "creature" and created a piece inspired by the prompt. They are pretty excellent, per usual! How cute is this baby dragon?! Some students used digital animation!
