Sea in the Sky by Chloe “People love mystery, and that is why they love my paintings.” ― Salvador Dalí Playdate in the Forest by Riley Surreal art is so mysterious and interesting! To start this lesson, we studied the surreal movement and analyzed the artwork by artists such as Dali and James Marsh. We discussed certain reappearing techniques that the artists used in their work and then brainstormed about how they could use those same techniques in a surreal collage. Dessert Desert by Ava Journey to Atlantis by Nina The goal of the students was to create a surreal landscape that combines dream and reality. By cutting images from magazines, they were able to keep the realism but create the dream effect by combining them with other images using the Surrealist techniques. Art Town by Michael 12 PIECES! He did such an awesome job picking pieces, cutting them out neatly and placing them so perfectly that it looked so natural! Love it! Kitty City by Anna Great work, kiddos!
I LOVE this project! Thank you to Refrigeratorgood for sharing this lesson. The students who created these are in eighth grade. EIGHTH. GRADE. These kiddos honestly never cease to amaze me. The students did their final print on a canvas that they painted an abstract background on at the beginning of the lesson. To finish off their paintings, they added highlights and shadows in complementary or accent colors. Some of the practice prints were just as stunning as their final prints! But their final pieces really stole the show. Boy, do they make me proud.
This year, the Weaver Middle School Drama Club performed the play, Peter Pan. If you know Peter Pan, you know there needs to be a Neverland. It was my students job to design, draw, and paint a 40 x 12 foot canvas to create the Neverland backdrop. This was an awesome opportunity for my students and I am so thankful and honored that the Drama Club asked us to do it! Thank you, Miss Emmons, Mr. Mclelland and Mrs. Muzzalupo!! We learned a lot and had some fun along the way! Seeing the backdrop come to life with the actors was incredible. All the actors and tech crew did such a great job! I was incredibly impressed! Outstanding work, 2nd Period Advanced Art! Bravo, 3rd Period Advanced Art!
Remember this little guy? It's the character that Advanced Art student, Gretchen, came up with for the "What Lives Inside" contest.
