Not everyone is crazy about drawing a still life, but a lot can be learned from the process. Not only did we learn about proximity, scale, and overlapping to achieve accuracy and to give viewers a sense of depth, we also learned a little about perseverance and not giving up. We started by learning some history behind the still life, which dates all the way back to the 1700's! Next, was our sketching process, where the students were encouraged to pick an angle that they liked and then crop their view in order to make an interesting and successful composition. Once they had their sketches done, they were able to start drawing their objects in white chalk on black paper. Next, they added color and finally added shading and highlights to give each of the objects form. Here are some of the finished drawings! Now on to printmaking!
