I love this project. My Advanced students started by studying and discussing work by expressive mixed media artists, Dan Eldon and Robert Rauschenberg. Then they picked a theme or message that they wanted to send through their artwork. They used the image transfer technique along with various experimental painting techniques... and they make some incredible stuff. Students also created artist statements to tell viewers what their work was about and the process they went through to create it. To finish off the project, students presented their work along with their artist statements, but some of their work was already hanging.. what were we to do? Take a field trip down the hall to the hanging artwork while marching in line holding a piece of yarn, of course! I know what you're thinking, "we did that when we were in kindergarten"! You might think my 8th graders would be annoyed and upset... but not these crazy (wonderful) kiddos! All smiles here :D And then they all listened intently while students took turns presenting their work.. except that kid smiling at the camera... SHAKEEL!! Take a minute to watch the video below; it's the artist statement by my spectacular student Jillian, who made her piece, Fly High, in honor of her uncle. It is absolutely beautiful. So AWESOME!
