Yes, it is true that most graffiti is vandalism; keyword: most. We talk about how graffiti is art but it is also vandalism and illegal if it is done on someone else's property. We also discuss how graffiti can be done legally by being paid by an authority to create a graffiti mural or doing it on paper! Since we figured we most likely wouldn't be asked to do a graffiti mural anytime soon, we decided to go with the latter and create graffiti on paper! Check them out! Students used a variety from materials including colored pencils, watercolor pencils, sharpies, and construction paper. Masashi and Joel both used complementary colors to create contrast and make their graffiti pop! Click the smaller photos for a larger view! Some students used their regular names, while others used nicknames and even gamer names. Amy did "ae" to stand for angel eyes. To add creativity, she added wings with real feathers!! So awesome! Of course the emojis were popular to add! Paige added a little cartoon character of herself and she happened to be wearing the exact outfit as the character on the day she presented her work!

Can I just state that my students absolutely blew me away with this one? I am so incredibly impressed with their work and can't possibly put into words how proud I am of them. For this project, the students took a picture of themselves and we used the grid method to aid with the drawing process. We talked a lot about proportion, proximity, and shading. Once they were finished with the drawing, they added something in color to say something about their personality. Take a minute (or hours) to look at them, I don't think you'll be disappointed! These kids are amazing! I'm really going to miss these guys and gals.
We also had students get a taste of life as a curator! Throughout each day that week, family and friends were invited into our school to see the show. Our "student curators" would take our guests on a tour, explaining the process of each project and answering questions along the way My mom even came to check it out! Thanks Mrs. Roholt! We also had the Davidson High School Art Department come over and judge the show! We originally wanted them to pick a first, second, and third place for both 2D and 3D, but they said they couldn't do that. They said it would be too hard to pick only six pieces of all the great work they saw! Instead, they picked a piece to be awarded "Best in Show" for each display (for example, one in Animal Printmaking, one in Expressive Mixed Media, etc.). Here are the winners! Congrats to all of our winners and an extra special congratulations to Alex, who won "Overall Best in Show" for all 2D and Advanced 2D.
I love this project! It's a collaborative project where students work as a group to replicate a famous portrait that becomes an interactive piece for the art show! Here's what we did... As a group, they picked their top three choices of paintings to replicate. I explained to them that they would be painting these on 2 x 4 foot luon boards. Which needed first to be primed! TEAMWORK! Yeah! Next, was drawing their portrait and then projecting it onto their primed boards. At last, they were ready to start painting! Even Andrew, who had a broken hand, helped out! Throughout this project, the students got to practice mixing and matching colors. Here's one of the "Color Queens" at work! Before long, they were almost done painting. But we still needed to cut the faces out so people could put their own faces in and become a part of the painting! It was time to get the drill out! With parental consent, a few students even helped cutting out the faces. Special thanks to all of my helpers and to parents for letting them! After sanding down the edges and adding finishing touches, they were finally ready to try on! Some groups even made little pieces to hold in front of their face! Our awesome custodian, Mr. Cunningham, had some fun trying some on too! Great job, groups!!
