All right stop, collaborate and listen! Collaborative grid drawing time! For this project, I partnered with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to give my students the opportunity to showcase their artwork in a new and exciting environment! The Columbus Zoo is opening a new exhibit called "Heart of Africa" (Check out a sneak peek of the new exhibit here)! The Advanced Art students divided themselves into groups of 3-4 students and picked a photo of an animal from the African Savannah. They gridded the photos and worked on individual squares that came together to become these beautiful 3 x 5 ft drawings! We voted on the drawings and brought the top four drawings to the zoo! We also allowed the winning groups to come to the zoo on a field trip to help install their drawings! Congrats to our winners! A giraffe by Courtney, Victoria, Skylar, and Kaitlin A gazelle by Sami, Avonna, and Abby Also, coverage of our trip and some of the artwork is also on the Hilliard City Schools website (link here)! An elephant by Hari, John, and Matt An overexposed lion by Kade, Jimmy, and Mina After we installed the artwork, we did a scavenger hunt! These girls threw their teacher in a cage... While on the scavenger hunt, I couldn't help snapping a few photos of these spectacular animals! And I had to photograph these strange creatures below. We had a great trip to the zoo! Parents who volunteered to chaperone, thanks again!! And students, I hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did! Mrs. Murlin and I are so proud of you! Check out the other drawings below. It was hard to leave them behind, but they are currently being displayed at school! Great job, Advanced Art! Left to right: A mongoose by Keegan, Sarah, Emily and Brooke A hyena by Torres, Yug, Jon, and Spencer A baby giraffe by Sam, Alex, and Max A cheetah by Justin, Micah, and Blake A jaguar by Maddie, Natalie, and Julie A tiger by Vincent

Adapted from this lesson. Fly with the Wind by Brayden Printmaking is a long process, but it's so worth it! For this project, we studied the history of printmaking and looked at several artists who practiced the technique. We focused on pop artist, Andy Warhol, and took inspiration especially from his Endangered Species series (example on the right). He used bright and unnatural colors but still portrayed the animal realistically. Grevy’s Zebra by pop artist, Andy Warhol They sketched and did a final drawing of their animal and then transferred it to a Styrofoam plate. The final piece had to include three mounted print that each had three layers of different colored ink. They had to carve some, ink and print, carve more, and repeat the process. On the right is Richaurd working on his second layer prints. Check out a few other second layer prints below by Kayla, Sophie, and Hannah. Next was the third layer. How adorable are these penguin prints by Jordan?! And this awesome shark by Abby! Once they had printed their third layer on all their prints, they trimmed and mounted them and finished their pieces off by titling and signing them. Feeling Crabby by Isaac Parrot of Disguise by Kyanna The Bugel by Jesse America's Bird by Dominic The Roaring Bear by Koichi Racing Stripes by Abbey Swan Song by Taylor Lion's Pride by Jessica Lazy Sunday by Kelly The Rainbow Wolf by Madysen Acrobatic Bald Eagle by Jesse 3 Shades of Elephant by Sydnee The Long Neck Series by Hannah The Wise Old Owl by Devyn Fishy Friends by Alex Above are a few final prints by Savannah, Ezra, and Joshua. I'm so proud of the 2D students not only because of their outstanding work, but also for the responsibility they displayed throughout the process of the entire project. Special thanks to multiple students in 1st period for their willingness to help set out materials each morning (even when I didn't ask) and to many in 7th period for cleaning (and organizing) materials at the end of each day! You guys rock!
Every gift matters. Last semester, my students created holiday and Christmas cards for the young patients at Nationwide Children's Hospital. They seemed to enjoy this project even more than I had imagined. My students really put a lot of time and thought into the cards and really poured their hearts into them (see the cards from last semester here). I wanted to give my students this semester the same opportunity so we made spring and Easter cards! They were so creative and thoughtful, and again, blew me away! Ezra made origami friend's for his recipient! Lily made a very pretty bracelet to go along with her card. And so did Kayla! Kakari made the cutest little pop-up bunny! Some students even made their own coloring pages and activities! This coloring page was done by Curtis. Anas also made some coloring pages for his recipient, "the prettiest Princess of them all". His coloring pages also included steps on how to become a successful princess. See Anas' steps in the coloring pages below (Step 3 is my favorite)! Step 1: You must be beautiful like Sleeping Beauty. Step 2: You must be wonderful like Cinderella. Step 3: The most important step of all, you must be kind. Check out the super creative maze Devyn designed! As you can see with Sarah's card, they were beautiful on the outside... But the real beauty of these cards was on the inside! "Your smile shines brighter than the sun, your eyes glow in the dark like the moon, your face is as beautiful as the prettiest flower, Have a wonderful spring!" These stellar drawings were done by Thea. Erica made this awesome box! Kelly made individual cards for when her recipient is feeling different emotions like sad, mad, or bored. The one below says, "open when... you need to be reminded how beautiful you are." Attached is a bottle of nail polish and the inside reads, "You are beautiful! You are you and that's the best thing you can be, your beautiful self. There's not a copy of you, there's only one you! BE-YOU-itiful", and it goes on about the reasons she is beautiful! See a few more example below! To top it all off, Emma brought in a bunch of wonderful books to donate to the patients. How thoughtful!! I'm sure the patients at the hospital were just thrilled to get these little gifts. Just remember, every gift matters!
