Create a Self Portrait Each week, Advanced 2D Art students must complete a weekly journal prompt in their Visual Journals. Last week's prompt was to create a self portrait. Check out what they came up with! By Monica Click the images in the gallery to get a closer look. I love how so many of them took a different approach! Awesome work, Advanced 2D Art!

A beautiful Visual Journal title page by Paige, 7th grade At the beginning of each semester, my new students begin their journey through art. Throughout my class, they keep a Visual Journal, where they take notes, respond to writing and drawing prompts and do sketches and jot down ideas for projects. These journals are a working piece of art, which starts with their title page. Check out some examples from my 2D and Advanced 2D art classes! Welcome new 2D Art and Advanced 2D Art students (and parents)! I'm so excited to get to know you and watch you grow and improve throughout the duration of the class. Here's to a great semester!
This project turned out to be incredibly fun! Art Alive was a collaborative project where 2D Art students created groups and picked a famous painting to recreate on a 2'x4' luon board. Once they finished the paintings, I cut out the faces of the figures in order to transform these Art Alive paintings into interactive works of art! After the faces were cut out, students sanded them down and did minor touch ups. Next, we had a little Twitter competition to see which pieces would have the honor of being displayed at Weaver's Annual Art Show! We took all of the paintings down to the commons for lunch and asked students to participate in the competition by taking their picture with their favorite paintings and tweeting it out to @wmscats with an #ArtAlive hashtag. This was so cool to watch! Click images below to get a better look! Here's a beautiful dancing ballerina! Once the results were in, it was time to start setting up for the art show! Students helped create signs to advertise and posted them around the building. After many hours of real life Tetris, the art space was ready for guests! We had a great turnout! And I'm so glad guests were getting interactive with the Art Alive! Hey! It's Miss Emmons! Thanks to all who attended and an extra special thanks to Dennis Hoffman and to all of the students who helped out! I had such a great time meeting parents and family to tell them about their rock star kids. Thank you to a great year and here's to many more to come!
It's hard to believe that the final projects have already come and gone! Advanced Art students are required to write a research paper and create a final work of art. They must pick an artist of their choice, do research on that artist, write a 2 page research paper and then create their own work of art inspired by that artist. Click the names of the artists in blue to see work by the original artists! Vincent did an outstanding job on his optical illusion inspired by renowned artist, M.C. Escher! Mina also found inspiration in M.C. Escher's work, specifically his drawings which included reflections. Mina came up with the idea to show the reflection of a man who is half from a time in the past (fully human) and half from a time in the future (partly robotic)! Very cool! M.C. Escher was the inspiration artist for Blake as well, but he took a much different approach. Instead of sticking to pencil and paper, like Escher did, Blake took the idea of the optical illusions but applied mixed media processes by combining an image transfer, gouache, and salt relief technique to create his piece. Julie decided to go abstract and created this wonderful piece inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. Natalie was drawn to the alluring work of contemporary artist, Marion McConaghie, and created this mixed media piece, which includes image transfers of text and a hand-drawn chalk pastel and ink butterfly. Sam created this painting inspired by mysterious European artist, Banksy. Like Banksy, Sam picked a social issue to address in his work, which is his opposition to gang violence. Sam portrayed this by creating a stencil of a masked man holding a banana instead of a weapon. Great work, Sam! Courtney created a beautiful flower painting inspired by none other than Georgia O'Keefe. Avonna got creative and painted a fantastical illustration of a flying wolf inspired by N.C. Wyeth! Abby has always loved the somewhat eerie work of Tim Burton (this site is AWESOME). She applied characteristics of his work to her drawings of musicians in some of her favorite bands. Abby did an excellent job of capturing his style! Victoria created this piece inspired by one of my favorite artists, Dan Eldon. She wanted to honor the soldiers, firefighters and other real life heroes in her piece by combining pictures of them, comic book superheroes and text of newspaper articles that tell of stories of honor and sacrifice. These gentlemen worked collaboratively to illustrate a children's book - check back for updates on the final book! I was very impressed with their work as well as many others! It has been a wonderful semester, Advanced Art kiddos. You have all grown and I am so very proud of you. Best wishes in high school and beyond!
"Without music, life would be a mistake." - Friedrich Nietzsche 1. By Maddie I recently stumbled upon a wonderful project called "Draw Me a Song". It's "an experimental project that explores the fusion between music and visual art. Through a colorful mix of illustration and hand-drawn typography, the project wants to blur the boundary between music and art, and visually bring to life some of the world's most famous songs." I knew at once that I had to do a similar project with my Advanced class! I challenged them to pick an excerpt from a song and illustrate their interpretation of the lyrics while incorporating the text in an interesting way. I was so excited to see what they would come up with, and per usual, my students far surpassed my expectations! Take a look at their work below and see if you can guess the songs they chose (see answers at the bottom). 2. By Brooke Click the smaller images for a larger view. 3. By Keegan 4. By Sami 5. Hope to see ya there!
All right stop, collaborate and listen! Collaborative grid drawing time! For this project, I partnered with the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to give my students the opportunity to showcase their artwork in a new and exciting environment! The Columbus Zoo is opening a new exhibit called "Heart of Africa" (Check out a sneak peek of the new exhibit here)! The Advanced Art students divided themselves into groups of 3-4 students and picked a photo of an animal from the African Savannah. They gridded the photos and worked on individual squares that came together to become these beautiful 3 x 5 ft drawings! We voted on the drawings and brought the top four drawings to the zoo! We also allowed the winning groups to come to the zoo on a field trip to help install their drawings! Congrats to our winners! A giraffe by Courtney, Victoria, Skylar, and Kaitlin A gazelle by Sami, Avonna, and Abby Also, coverage of our trip and some of the artwork is also on the Hilliard City Schools website (link here)! An elephant by Hari, John, and Matt An overexposed lion by Kade, Jimmy, and Mina After we installed the artwork, we did a scavenger hunt! These girls threw their teacher in a cage... While on the scavenger hunt, I couldn't help snapping a few photos of these spectacular animals! And I had to photograph these strange creatures below. We had a great trip to the zoo! Parents who volunteered to chaperone, thanks again!! And students, I hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did! Mrs. Murlin and I are so proud of you! Check out the other drawings below. It was hard to leave them behind, but they are currently being displayed at school! Great job, Advanced Art! Adapted from this lesson by Pam Wellington Friendship by Kaitlin "The Journey is the Destination" - Dan Eldon Dan Eldon is one of my all-time favorite artists. He was a compassionate humanitarian and outstanding photo journalist. His visual journals are just fantastic (check out some examples below). Eldon experimented with mixed media to express his messages, which became the assignment to the Advanced Art students for this project. Above: Journal pages by artist, Dan Eldon. We also looked at the work of prolific American artist, Robert Rauschenberg for inspiration. Rauschenberg worked with image transfers and like Eldon, tried to convey meaningful messages through his art. Right: People for the American Way by Robert Raushenberg Below: Yug works on transferring his images. The students picked a theme and a message they would like to convey through their piece. Next, they collected images and selected a color scheme to help illustrate their chosen message. They transferred their images to canvas and then experimented with different mediums and techniques to complete their project. Abby working on her piece, Heartfelt. Happy Life by Yug Beautiful Lebanon Deep in the Forest The City by Sarah By Sammi By Micah The Guardians of the Banner by Justin Snakes of Unknown The Voices of One My Family Tree by Sam by Avonna by Courtney We Remember by Alex Looking Forward Prosperity Music Throwback by Skylar by Blake By Victoria Sacrifice By Max Once they finished their pieces, they wrote an artist statement and recorded themselves describing their piece. Check out Max's video below. Natalie with her piece, Those Who Fight. CHECK THIS OUT!! The piece below was created in honor of our soldiers. Matthew, the student who made it, accidentally left it in the "Party Room" from when he was filming. Read the letters below to see what happened next! Our custodian, Jim, found the artwork and wrote this letter. It reads: This was left in the "Party Room". If the young artist doesn't want this, I would like to have it. I will buy it from him (her?). Thanks, Jim This is what Matthew wrote back: Dear Jim, I am glad that you liked my work so I would like to give it to you as a gift. Sincerely Matthew Matthew brought the piece to Jim and he lit up! Jim shoot his hand and thanked him. I got to witness it and it brought me to tears. How awesome is that?
Ever since I got involved with drama in high school, I’ve absolutely loved putting on plays so when I heard about the drama club here at Weaver, I immediately jumped on the opportunity to be a part of it. The director decided to put on Once Upon a High School, which was a fabulous choice! I helped with casting and directing, but being the art teacher, my main job was to get the set painted. I asked my Advanced 2D Art classes if they’d like to help and they said they’d love to! I designed an image, projected it onto the set and my students got to work. Some students were painting, while others were gathering and cleaning materials. It was so wonderful to see them all working together! Both of my classes worked diligently through their entire class period and many of them even gave up the majority of their lunch and free period. I was so impressed at how eager they were to help and give up their time! After a few hours of work, it really started to come together! Check out the finished set below! Great job Advanced students!! Thank you so much for all your hard work, you did an outstanding job! Thank you also to everyone else who was involved with the play. It was such a wonderful experience and I can't wait to help out again next year!
Oh, the ever beautiful human figure! We started this project by studying the figure in art throughout history dating all the way back to prehistoric cave paintings. Next, I taught them the proportions of the figure and face. Then it was time to put it into practice and start drawing! Kaitlin The students did timed gesture drawings from life to start. They had to break the figure down into basic shapes. The students then picked an image of a figure to draw for their final. See some of the sketches below. For their final drawings, the students were to draw the full figure as accurately as possible on a large format (18" x 24"). They had to shade the figure while keeping contrast in mind. They also had to keep their drawings balanced in order to create a successful composition. The students started with the basic shapes and then added the contour, shading, and details. An initial sketch by Jonathan Maddie's drawing not yet fully shaded` Avonna Justin Abbie Matt Torres Skylar Blake Vincent Way to blow me away on the first big project! Now I know how talented you all are so you better keep up the great work!
