This first piece was inspired by the dainty dancers of the artist chosen by Gretchen.
Wow. The pieces below are the result of the Advanced 2D Art student's final project. The prompt was to pick an artist, write a research paper on them, and then create their own work of art inspired by the style and/or meaning behind the work of the same artist. Per usual, I was quite impressed. Take some time to look through their great work! This first piece was inspired by the dainty dancers of the artist chosen by Gretchen. Juan drew spiders to create the illusion of them crawling toward the viewer! Hemalee took inspiration from the geometric shapes by Paul Klee. Danielle was inspired by the beauty and meaning behind contemporary artist, Sandra Chevrier's stunning work. Sean was drawn to the social and political satire of street artist, Banksy and created his very own (legal) graffiti. Kylie used patterned paper to create dresses inspired by characters in one of her favorite shows, Once Upon a Time. James loved Tang Yau Hoong's creative use of space and incorporated it into his own piece. Whitney used a variety of her own color schemes to create a three piece series inspired by the drippy, flower-like shapes of abstract artist, Cy Twombly. The "Happy Trees" of Bob Ross are what inspired Cameron to do this earthy landscape. Manny created a self-portrait in the style of Basquait, the neo-expressionist, who used bold colors and expressive lines in his work. Alex loved the soft edges of the impressionist artist she studied. Anna discovered an incredible contemporary artist named Lora Zombie and created a piece to send her own message about a current social issue. Check out this impressive illusion by Nathan!! Jordan and Klaire were both attracted to the beauty of nature seen in the work of Georgia O'Keefe. Kototne did this drawing first on her iPhone, printed it out, colored it with Copic markers, shaded with colored pencils, and added highlights with white out. Mind blown! This three piece series was created by Katie and inspired by the playful work of Eric Carle. She used paint and different tools to create texture on tissue paper and pasted them together to create little foxes! Faith painted this rainy cityscape with inspiration from Camille Pissaro. Corinne loved the combination of bright colors, nature, and swirls by the contemporary artist she found. Katelyn painted these beautiful birds in the style of a great illustrator. Keith created his own comic in the style of the creator of Garfield. Brayden and Mac both took inspiration from Jasper Johns and created two very different pieces! To finish off the project, we went outside to have a final critique of their work. Some of these young ladies and gents were part of my first classes I'd ever taught so saying "Goodbye" was no easy task. These students are so talented, thoughtful, creative, intelligent, and driven. I have no doubt that they'll do great things. So to them, good luck in high school and beyond. Do your best in all that you do, and do so with a smile on your face... you never know whose day you might be brightening. Oh, and don't forget to stop and smell the flowers. Thanks for the reminder, Monica :)
